When Implant Replacement is Necessary | Replacing Breast Implants

When Implant Replacement is Necessary

When considering a breast augmentation in Newport Beach, it is important to consider the lifespan of your implants and to be aware of situations in which a replacement may be needed. In the past, it was a well-known idea that breast implants only lasted 10 years before they needed to be replaced. However, now, surgeons understand that implants can last longer than 10 years, and really only need to be replaced if one the following three situations occur:

Rupture

Although rare, silicone and saline implants can rupture. If a saline implant were to rupture, the implant would deflate, and the saline solution inside would be absorbed by the body. When a silicone implant ruptures, however, it is not noticeable, since the silicone gel is not absorbed by the body. In either case, an appointment with your breast surgeon should be made for an implant replacement procedure.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue forms around the breast, causing it to harden and become uncomfortable. It can also change position or shape as well. When this occurs, a procedure to replace the implants is needed.

Desire for Change

In some cases, patients may be unhappy with their breast augmentation results from another surgeon or have simply changed their mind about their breast size. In these situations, a correction procedure or implant replacement procedure can be done.
